The new anti-spam legislation came into effect across Canada this year. The new law requires clear opt-in based consent for any commercial email communications. You may have noticed your inbox flooded in the past few weeks with requests for consent to continue sending you emails, this is why.
Canada’s Anti Spam Legislation (CASL) makes Canada one of the toughest countries on electronic spam. Our new requirements take us farther than the United States which requires that emails contain an option to unsubscribe from future communications.
The punishments for flouting this legislation is serious. For businesses, penalties include up to $10,000,000 in fines, while for individuals that number is $1,000,000.
Companies are advised to learn about the new legislation, and train their employees accordingly.
2015 will see CASL crackdowns on companies and individuals as the grace periods expire.
